Lazio
The capital region, located in central Italy, is home to the world's greatest ancient empire. The Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana (Emperor Hadrian's residence) are in Tivoli, just outside Rome.
Rome
Rome's most famous and most recognized landmark is the ancient Colosseum, but there are many more attractions to visit in the "Eternal City". The Piazza del Campidoglio (in Capitoline Hill) was designed in the 16th century by Michelangelo Buonarroti and took 4 centuries to complete. There are also the Roman temple, the Pantheon, and the Spanish Steps. The Vatican City (the world's smallest country) and its church, St Peter's Basilica are also a major landmark.
