After a few months of not doing anything related to a new topic you learned, it can be pretty easy to forget bits and pieces of what you were taught. Especially since it’s a new topic, you may not have had the time previously to commit every little detail to your brain.

Cheating is OK… Sometimes.
“Cheating” in the design world is OK and sometimes even encouraged.
Skylar Johnston, AAD86 FA23
One thing I have begun to learn more and more by talking to peers and mentors is that cheating is OK! Sometimes.
The biggest thing that is important to remember when learning a new (specifically technological) skill, is that it’s not going to be easy at first. As us designers and coders open up our world to new diverse technological tools, there are numerous learning curves we must face! When it comes to coding, memorization of semantics and syntax is important to code effectively and efficiently. Memorization does no happen without practice. And in the design world, memorizing which tools does what and keyboard shortcuts is one of the biggest learning curves there it to the program! (in my opinion). So now is when the cheating comes in, and by cheating I mean the good old internet. I think cheating is a pretty serious term for what I am talking about but its catchy. So what I’ve learned after taking the summer break and revisiting many programs that all contain their own selection of tools and rules, CHEAT! Go to google, watch some tutorials, learn some new skills. The internet is such a powerful tool and in the real world, we wont be limited to only the knowledge we have. So ack questions, be curious, and CHEAT!
It will make you a better designer.
Lisa’s Learning Journal: Week 2
How does HTML work again??
It’s been a while since I last worked with HTML, so I feel a little rusty. I took AAD85 with Natalie Rishe, and I’m so thankful she made us document everything we did in her class. I am able to refer back to a simpler time when I remember what the heck is going on.

On September 5th, 2023, I, Austin Hayes, have written this account of my first two weeks of AAD 86. On August 21st, the first day of the semester, I sighed as I opened Canvas, as my summer was now over, and the start of fall had started. Seeing my two classes, I opened the most interesting one, AAD 86.

Growing is Learning and Learning is Growing: How do we go to “the edge” of what is comfortable, and then take another step?

When I am not reaching for a new goal, learning something new or exploring what is uncharted or scary for me, I am not growing. The things that scare me are often the things that I know I have to step into to get to where I want to go. This semester, I have set some professional goals to broaden my horizons in web design, but this is not my only venture. Public speaking has always been a fear of mine (and many of us). I have decided to join a local chapter of Toastmasters, an organization that teaches and fosters positive feedback and an opportunity to face fears in public speaking. I believe that this step of courage will benefit me in not only the professional world, but also in interpersonal communication.
I hope in this class to answer these questions every week:
- How have I pushed “my edge” professionally?
- What have I learned in this web design class that I will take into the professional world?
- How have I pushed “my edge” personally?
Day by Day
Glad to be here learning more web development. I have a number of pages and sites to refurbish and upgrade with contemporary code and styles, maybe some script. Looking forward to it.

Introducing my first Learning Journal entry! So far in this class I’ve reviewed HTML tags and basic code structure for HTML pages. Luckily, while not practicing much over the summer and having taken AAD 85 three years ago, I still feel a familiarity with HTML and Visual Studio thanks to the Interaction Design class I took last semester.

The first two weeks were busy. First, I met my new classmates. I learned how to better organize my life and to do everything without stress.

Over the first two weeks of Fall semester, I practiced some basic HTML by working on the future resume project, set goals for myself, and did some review of HTML tags.

The HyperText Markup Language or HTML is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. It defines the meaning and structure of web content. It is often assisted by technologies such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and scripting languages such as JavaScript.

I took AAD 85 in the Spring of 2023. I also was working at a company where I had to use HTML/CSS on the daily. After the Spring, and after getting laid off, I haven’t looked at a line of code since. And it shows.
