My Goals and What I Learned This Week

This week, I was really challenged by the Sacramento writer’s group and zen music festival challenges.

The two challenges this week started off pretty well, as I got the HTML and most of the CSS down. I am proud of myself for being able to figure out pretty much all of it, apart from a few minor CSS details. The solutions helped me to figure out where I went wrong. I learned more about CSS; both about properties like transform and in how effective my skills are. I found it took me less time to piece together and figure out what I needed to do in order to get my CSS to work.

I felt, and currently feel, pretty challenged by the second part of the challenge in which we must add media queries. I understand what they are and how they’re supposed to work, but somehow they aren’t working in the way they’re meant to in my CSS. The rules I apply to the queries apply to the full website- meaning that the CSS changes even when I don’t want it to in the mobile design. I feel frustrated by this, but I know that at least I tried and the solutions will be able to help me next week.

A goal that has developed is to learn more about responsive design and learn how to fix mistakes that are keeping the media queries from working correctly. With CSS, I can pretty easily look through my code and decide what to do in order to make the CSS do what I’d like. With media queries being so new, I would like to continue to learn about them and how to successfully use them.

A long-term goal I continue to have is to not spend too much time on assignments or stress out about them. I tend to be easily stressed out the second I don’t understand something; likely due to holding myself to high academic standards. Professor Mead has told me several times to not spend hours and hours on assignments, and instead to just my best. I will continue to follow this and not feel upset when I have yet to learn something!
