The Art of Typography

Combining fonts is really an unappreciated skill, unless you realize its not exactly the easiest design concepts to master.

Last week was a short week but not lacking in fundamentals. In design, there are MANY concepts to be weary of whether you are working in publication design on good old fashioned paper or on the web. Design principles can be daunting and redundant. Typography is a design principle where the catalyst of understanding is realizing an understatement is a statement all on its own. Simplicity is key. Using type that is readable and uncomplicated is most preferred. Who knew? As a designer, having SO many options like we have with the amount of font choices is almost a nightmare. It almost goes against my creative mentality to choose something as bland as Times New Roman or Futura.

With that said, typography is not so much an art as it is common sense and understanding that font is supposed to complement the other design concepts that has been utilized to create that particular website or magazine spread; its almost secondary. Simple, classy, elegant, and eye pleasing is much more important than wacky, crazy, what-does-that-say script/handwriting font. Leave that stuff to the wedding invites and the DIY crafts.
