Week 5 & 6 Layout Techniques

These last two weeks have been a challenge! I had never even heard of grid, positioning, or floats, until this course. This is all very new and a bit overwhelming, but I am determined to understand it to the best of my abilities.

In the AAD 85 course that I took, flexbox was only mentioned briefly and at surface level at the end of the course. Positioning, grid, and floats are all completely new to me. I am having a hard time really grasping the concept of positioning, it confuses me quite a bit.

However, I feel like I am getting somewhere with grid. I understand the concept, where and when it could be useful, but I have a really hard time doing it on my own. I can see the correct code, understand it, and repeat it myself, but doing it on my own with no guidance is tough. I feel like I never know where to start, but if I’m given a hint I can eventually get there. That’s why I appreciated the  Introduction to CSS Grid & Grid Challenges assignment. It was helpful to have the answers, not to copy from, but to go to when I am absolutely stuck or don’t know where to start. I think this assignment definitely helped me better understand grid.

My struggles with grid are probably what caused me difficulty in the Bakery Site Challenge. I figured everything out quick and easy until the last three articles. I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to get them to sit side by side like they were originally, without touching the HTML. I tried flexbox multiple times, and did my best trying to use grid with my limited knowledge and understanding, and it would not work for me. I ended up just adding two lines of HTML to solve the problem because I was completely stuck. I am looking forward to seeing the solution. Most often, the solutions are much simpler than I think they are, and I overthink my solutions too much causing me to get stuck.

I am looking forward to seeing solutions for the assignments we completed, as well as move forward with the midterm project! I am excited to get feedback on my layout and continue working on it. I feel like I learned a lot this week with a lot of trial and error, can’t wait to see what’s waiting for us next week!
