Typography This Week

Who knew there was so much to

Web Fonts! Weights, sizes, regular or italicized fonts! It’s crazy how many variations there are of each font. Then there are variable fonts.

A web font is a typeface designed for use on websites, ensuring text appears consistently across different devices and browsers. Unlike system fonts, which rely on what’s installed on a user’s device, web fonts are hosted online and are loaded through CSS using services like Google Fonts or Adobe Fonts. This allows designers to use unique, brand-specific typography while maintaining readability and performance. Formats like WOFF2 are optimized for the web, improving load times and accessibility.

A variable font is a single font file that contains multiple styles (like weight, width, and slant) that can be adjusted dynamically. Instead of needing separate files for Regular, Bold, Italic, etc., one variable font lets designers fine-tune these attributes smoothly along a spectrum. This improves performance (fewer files to load), flexibility (more customization), and responsiveness (adapts better to different screens). They’re especially useful in web and UI design for creating scalable, efficient typography.

Typography is an essential element of design that we continuously refine and explore in our work. Whether in print or digital mediums, typefaces are powerful tools of expression, subtly influencing perception and communication.
