These last few weeks in Web Design have been challenging but fun! From the Concentric Design Challenge to creating our Midterm Website Design to our introduction to responsive design, we have been through a lot.
The Concentric Website Challenge was fun, but expectedly a bit hard to get through. Setting up the website took a long time, especially since I tried my best to things like type out the newer properties, I had just learned to help better commit them to memory. The flexbox version of the website was challenging simply because of how many ways you could have done it correctly. I did need to drop in to see a tutor because of this, but he was very helpful! In the end, it was another helpful step to understanding flexbox, positioning, and flex grids.
Then, we had our introduction to Responsive Design. I always wondered how Web Designers made websites fit each screen size, and now I know! It was honestly a lot easier than I expected it to be, but I’m sure I’ll still make a mistake or two when I implement it on my own. I also did the extra credit assignment because I was interested in learning more about the topic. Overall, I enjoyed everything related to Responsive Design, and I can’t wait to learn more about it and use it.
Lastly, there was the Midterm Project. The Midterm Project originally intrigued me because we wouldn’t have to code it; just design it. On top of that, we were given three weeks to do it. Now that I’ve gone through the whole assignment, I was super grateful for the amount of time given, and for it being just a design project. While I know I could accomplish the design I’ve created with the tools I’ve learned, I know it would have taken a lot of time and it would have been super stressful. Additionally, while I thought three weeks would be a bit too long, it ended up being the perfect amount of time. I was allowed to dance through different concepts, mess with the composition, mess with the color palette and fonts, and not feel stressed to do it quickly. I feel like my creativity was really allowed to flow within this project. Because of this, I was able to create a design that I’m sure I could code, and a design that I like visually.
Overall, this was a very interesting two weeks. I enjoyed the material that we explored, and now we’re more than halfway through the class! I can’t wait to see what the other half has in store for me.
