This piece was a basic assessment in an art class to showcase our ability to use charcoal as a medium, and our skills regarding contrast and lighting. It is charcoal on paper, and took about an hour and a half.
The exact kind of plant is unknown to me, but this was practice in using white charcoal in addition to charcoal sticks and blocks. Stylization was encouraged so long as I adhered to the medium.
I can use watercolors and ink when given more time, but I really am more of a pencil person. Hense the title. I was not greatly inspired to work with brush ink. I was given roughly an hour to work on this, and feel I still have much to improve on.
Maybe I have more of a problem with the brush itself rather than the ink, because I greatly enjoyed working with a stick and ink for this piece. I do wish I had more time to flesh out the background, but I am still much happier with this one.
This is a 18x24 inch self portrait using micron pens. It took a little over 2 weeks to finish intermittently. I am happy with the edits I made from the original photo, and happy with the lighting. I am not happy with the shape of my nose.
