Wordsworth
Wordsworth was a life-changing author in my literary life. It was the first time that I felt like someone felt the same way I did about nature. He was able to say what I had thought about but was not able to express in words, as I was very young when I began reading him. I loved his nostalgia for life and lost time: his work is incredible!
Christina Rossetti
Why I chose Christina Rossetti is because her poem, “Goblin Market,” was one of the most memorable poems that I had read up to that point. I liked how feminist it feels, even without her having that intention in mind. It was also a step to becoming a grown up for me, since I read it when I was much younger and truly innocent.
I remember asking my professor what the fuss was all about since everyone would comment that it was sensual, and I could not see it. Rossetti did such a great job at hiding the details, that it was not possible for a young, unexperienced reader to see them. He told me, “I refuse to be the one to take away your innocence, Rosie,” and, “Ask someone else to explain it to you.” I still can see him sitting on his chair looking at me and telling me; he was truly frustrated. This is essential, great writing.
Amado Nervo
Amado Nervo is one of my most favorite poets of all time. His poem, “En Paz” or “In Peace,” was what I lived by when I was a teenager. I wanted my life to be that rich and full as a grownup. In this poem he is thanking life itself for giving him such a great life. “Despite the pains” he says it was worth it in the end. And it is from this poem that the phrase “I am [we are] the architect of my [our] own destiny” comes. Many people say it these days and most don’t know where it came from.
The poem “En Paz,” along with Elena Poniatowska’s “The Message,” were my nightly prayers. I would read these two poems every night for a long time. They gave me life and hope. I too could have that beautiful experience, and even if we don’t fully understand what it means (as I was only fourteen), we know that some authors are great because they do.
