Definition
The lotus flower is an aquatic plant made up of two extant species; the American Lotus and the Sacred Lotus. The lotus flower belongs to nelumbonaceae- simply put, a family of aquatic flowering plants. They contain the two previously mentioned species, as well as at least five other types known from and by fossils.

- American Lotus- Nelumbo nucifera
- Sacred Lotus- Nelumbo lutea


Varieties
Although the lotus flower has two specific species, there are many different types or varieties- some lesser known. A few include:
- Angel wings lotus
- Cherry lotus
- Blue star lotus
- Red Beijing lotus
