This last week I couldn’t attend class due to family events and Thursday we had no class. However, there was still a lot of learning to be had within the course files. I think this week the work made me go through all the emotions – fun, annoyed, and relief!
Last semester in Bill’s Javascript and UI/UX class, I realized something about myself. I love the cool tricks, fun animation, and the many design concepts I can now code, but I loathe mobile sites. Last fall we did prototypes (which can be done for full websites), but focused more on mobile sites or apps. I was not interested.
Now, I know that the direction everyone has gone is mobile due to tablets and smartphones; the basic user doesn’t even own a PC or laptop anymore – which I think is blasphemy. Nevertheless, its true. My youngest brother who is 19, doesn’t even know how to properly use a laptop because for all of his young adult years, people his age have had cell phones. My first cell phone had no texting, no pictures, not even internet. All you could do was make phone calls. Thankfully, unlike most younger people I know what it’s like to not have technology take over my days and I highly value what a laptop can do. But I digress.
I can only do so much on my cell phone and then I put it aside and get my laptop out. I like having a mouse. The capabilities are there, sure. I once wrote an entire three page essay using my cell phone’s Microsoft Word app and printed it from my phone. User capabilities are endless on phones, not to mention tablets!
Coding for tablets and mobile is a different beast. I don’t like the designs, but I do get how its important to have responsive design for a website. Companies and people need to be found by potential customers via phone, tablet, and internet. I just mainly like it when I resize a window verses how it looks on mobile. Again, I digress. The coding for responsive design adds to my knowledge and I always like that, and ultimately its not too complicated to remember.
My main problem at this point remains to be converting floating to flexbox.
