Welcome to Just a Guitar!

What is this Website all about?

Guitars! I guess that's already pretty obvious. This site is dedicated to talking about one of the most beautiful instruments ever created. Not only is the Guitar a beautiful sounding instrument, but it's also gorgeous to look at. I'll be talking about the history behind the guitar as well as my personal story of how I came to find this amazing instrument!

The History of the Guitar

It's how old?

The oldest known incarnation of the guitar was developed in the 16th century. It looked nothing like the guitars that we have now. It was origionally much more bowl shaped, had only 4 strings, and was tuned to C–F–A–D, the same tuning as the lute and the vihuela. By 1800 it had developed to have 6 strings and was tuned to the tuning that we know today, E-A-D-G-B-E. In the 19th century the body of the guitar was changed from the bowl shape into the shape that we now recognize as a guitar. This was when the classical guitar, as we know it now, was developed by Antonio Torres.

My Story

Where it all started

When I was 10 years old, flipping through YouTube, I found someone playing a fingerstyle version of a pop song. This wasn't the boring strumming that I associated with the guitar, this was exciting! I was hooked. I started searching for more songs being played in this style. I found that there was not only a huge community of fingerstyle guitarists, but that a lot of sheet music was offered for free. I asked my parents for a guitar that Christmas and spent almost every free moment after that learning the skills and techniques required to play the songs that I wanted to learn. After about a year of practice I could finally play like some of the videos that I had seen. That was all the encouragement that I needed, and I've continued to learn everything that I can about the guitar ever since.
