Similarly, in the world of design, we entice those who visit to catalytically overcome listlessness to interact in tasks and actions. However, when we design those systems, we ought to pensively consider the best approach to design those who are taking the small steps by viewing from a phone, or investigating with a tablet, or exploring on a desktop… and who better to help design than the mighty beaver.

As little backstory.. As a person who matured into the iPhone era, gaining access to the first iPhone the year out of college, I recall the difficulty navigating the pages on the screen. Most sites then weren’t designed to have someone pinch into a section of the page easily (many sites had several anchors and links that would trigger when attempting to enlarge). For example, facebook primarily inhabited the desktop website domain while extending functionality with their App inside of Apple walled-garden ecosystem. A chasm remained between the application space and the broader net sites, until we discovered responsive designs.

These techniques allowed website designers to detect the window browser size and respond reactively to suit the user’s browsers. The site could share space on Phones as well as Desktops. Henceforth, the designs of website morphed, allowing flow, damming content into manageable sections. All the content flooded into the desktop sites where a broader and more accessible view of the content would be presented. And like the mighty beaver, we must construct those water projects with the same forethought as those water works.

As an exercise this week, I tested the reflexive design process of building from the mobile layout into the desktop version. As a lifelong desktop jockey, I gravitate toward the extra viewing window — comfortably controlled in my own personal space — so when trying to design for the mobile first I had to restructure my beaver-mind. The stacked layout of the mobile design tended to resemble a natural progression, top down, and readable. Moving from there, I saw how the tablet size design had the same water source of content and could add an extra images and column flourishing to supplement the extra irrigation. Lastly, the desktop version coalesce all the of the conveying content in the large layout lake, where the whole design could breathe with extra space.

In the process of designing for each layout, I noticed the trickling flow of the design process. As I imagine the beaver believes, I think the design process allows for cascading content presentation and allows for a more cohesive and cohabiting environment.

For the common phrase for enacting change in the world is “think globally, act locally”, we tend to reduce the cognitive load of the world’s problems into manageable tasks, projects, and actions.
