We looked at major ideas in css, like Inheritance, Cascade and Specificity. CSS rules can come from any number of sources and can be mediated in myriad ways from source to user. Inheritance, Cascade and Specificity are some of the influences on how the final result is expressed, the rules of the road so to speak.

CSS cascades in an order governed by rules of importance. They are:
Author inline styles
Author embedded or internal styles
Author external styles
User styles
Default browser styles

Some styles can be inherited throughout a document and some may not. Inherited styles tend to be related to text, like font or color. Usually the spacial arrangement of elements on a page, including borders, margins and padding will not inherit.

Specificity is one way that conflicting rules can be implemented. In order of importance, id selectors, class and pseudo class selectors and element selectors. One can look at importance as the rules that define specificity.

Selectors can be compound or multiple:
This is an example of a compound selector:
}

    ul li {
        margin-bottom: auto;
    }

This is an example of a multiple selector:
}

    h2, h3, h4 {
        font-family: Georgia;
        text-transform: uppercase;
    }

Other considerations that we mentioned in the cascade are browsers styles. Each browser will have an effect on one’s code, and to that problem we looked at css reset and normalize to identify the differences associated with different browsers.

Then we looked ahead in the web development crystal ball and the possible fate of html and css by Rachel Andrew.

We practiced css styling the page on lemmings and then we created our own content in html markup that would be styled with css in week four. As usual we are given by instructor and peer students alike, additional resources and sites to further our knowledge and skills.

With week four we studied web fonts, their sources, protocols, linking, principles, combinations with a focus on typography on the web. We practiced more html and css by building a web page from scratch, our portal page, and the use of ftp to load our work on the web. We continued with our learning partners and posting to this Learning Journal.

This is a summary of our topics of concentration for weeks three and four in Intermediate Web Design.

[230
4,23,3,15,18
post-1527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-aad-086-fa23","tag-css","tag-css-layout","tag-html","tag-typography","tag-web-design
["GET
