Fit-n-Happy Prototype Case Study

Designed and developed by Austin Hayes

Overview

What is Fit-n-Happy?

Fit-n-Happy is an app that is designed for those who are disabled to help them stay fit and find exercises that they can do. It is also made to build a community of people that can help each other with problems that they face.

Who is the target audience?

The target audience is people who are disabled, male and female from anywhere between 18 and 43. It also is designed so anyone disabled or not, and of any age can use it.

What problems does Fit-n-Happy solve?

When researching, I noticed that there were not many, if at all, any apps that were similar to mine in concept. While there are many different fitness apps available, none are targeted and designed for differently-abled people who cannot find what they need personally on such apps.

UX Research

After doing some research, I realized that I have a lot of good opportunities but I also have some challenges to overcome. Some of the weaknesses of the app included being too dependent on interacting with others and the clarity of who the app is for. After some thinking and working through some ideas, I decided that one way I can show who the app is for is with graphics. All of my graphics show people with disabilities exercising. For the other problem, I tried to make the app have two sides to it. One side is from where you would exercise, and the other aspect of the app is to find friends and help others overcome their challenges.

App Design

When I first started to work on the app, I really wanted to work on how it would look as it would be a big factor in how the app turned out. When going back after critiques, there weren't any major changes needed to the design. Mostly, just some small things that needed to be fixed, and after that, I started expanding the app functionality. This was the process throughout making the whole app.

Tasks

Fit-n-Happy currently has 5 tasks. The first task is to log into the app. The second and third tasks are to get to the workout list and “favorite” a workout. The fourth task is to get to your goals and view your progress on them. The last task is to edit the next day's goals.

Usability Tests and Further Development

The participants thought that Fit-n-Happy was overall easy to navigate, with most of its features being easy to understand. Implementing their recommendations will make the app more streamlined and more user-friendly. Further development will consist of adding a messenger to the app and adding other users to create a community.

Summary

Overall I really enjoyed working on this project. I learned a lot from doing this project too! Some of the biggest things that I have learned are mostly about prototyping and how to design apps and websites. The thing that I'm the most proud of is the app design itself. It turned out a lot better than I thought it would.
