The Perfect Cone

Mount Mayon is a popular tourist spot and is known for its "perfect cone" because of its symmetric conical shape. It is a classic stratovolcano with a small central summit crater. Just like any other volcanoes around the Pcific Ocean, Mayon is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Location

Mayon is the highest point of Albay and the whole Bicol Region in Luzon Island Philippines. In folklores and mythology, this volcano is regarded as very sacred. It is the most active volcano in the Philippines and is continously being monitored by PHIVOLCS (Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology).

Mythology

It is said that the volcano grew from the gorund where lovers Daragang Magayon and Panganoron were burried. Thus, the ancient Bicolanos named it after the legendary heroine Daragang Magayon (Beautiful Lady). It was also said that the volcano was chosen by a god named Gugurang as his home and chose Mayon as the repository of the sacred fire os Ibalon.

Eruptions

As Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines, in the past 500 years it has errupted more than 47 times. As the record show, its first erruption was in 1616. The most distructive recorded eruption to ever occur was on Februrary of 1814, which burried the town of Cagsawa.
