Some people would love to stand out in a crowd. But me, I am happy going along with the flow most of the time. This year at the Addys Awards Gala I thought it would be fun to do a little dress up. In past years, it was a thing – people really got into it. This year the theme was decades, exploring advertising throughout the decades of the local club. And since all this year’s promotion was centered around a very strong retro 50s and 60s styling I thought that would be a fun genre to dress up.
I found a fun early 70s print coat/dress that I wore over a solid black top & skirt – not way out there as far as fashion but fun. I arrived early and helped hang up the last of the print ads for guests to review and choose the People’s choice piece. I then reviewed all the pieces hanging up as guests arrived. About 30 minutes into the social hour I realized there wasn’t any other unique fashions in the dress up category. I was beginning to feel a little uncomfortable but thought maybe a few would arrive. Nope! By the time dinner started I was still the only one in retro fashion. Can I crawl under the table now?
As much as I kept telling myself it really doesn’t matter, it did. I felt like an idiot all night. But, dress aside, it was a great gala, was well organized and there was some fun challenges for the guests. And I was a part of the entertainment, sticking out like a sore thumb. I learned it is good to go out on a limb sometimes but maybe check first how far out on that limb to go.
