Public Place Observation

Location

Surrounded by other small shops the Starbucks coffee shop sits on the corner block of buildings with a small parking lot and outdoor seating area for guests. The exterior walls of the shop are tan and have varying shades of neutral browns while the seating has about 10 tables and 20 chairs sitting under the shade of 3 dark green umbrellas. Inside the double glass doors at the entrance, you will see two small square tables to your left and a walkway to the right leading you to the counter where you can see the variety of food options including pastries, drinks, cookies, and more. On the way to the counter, a rack of bottles and coffee beans are on display. The floor is made up of small tile pieces colored dark grey with a hint of brown. The ceiling is a dark brown tile with the pieces being bigger than the ones on the floor. Morning light is cast through the windows, creating long shadows and cool-colored light.

Specifics

Different kinds of lights hang from the ceiling, making up different sections of the shop, including hanging lamps from long poles and a long metal bar with small lightbulbs attached. There are two different types of tables spread throughout the shop underneath the hanging lights. One type of table has a small square wooden top with a smooth dark finish with a single metal pole reaching the base of the table. The other is a longer rectangle with a wooden top that is twice as long as the first table and dark red metal legs wrapping around each side. They are both about 3 feet tall in height. The chairs are all modern-looking wooden chairs with a dark wood stain. The walls are a creamy white color with a dark wooden trim on the bottom climbing the wall upward about 3 feet and aligning with the height of the tables.

Interior Design

The artwork spread around the small shop, hanging on the walls consists of mostly black-and-white photos from the inside of old coffee shops. Old kitchen tools were also hanging on the walls, such as a wooden rolling pin. The advertisements in the coffee shop consist of the Starbucks logo on all the cups and packaging for food and beverages. There is also a tall vertical poster sitting on a wire stand on the floor that is light blue in color and features a white cup with a straw in the middle that has the text “Delicious for real” plastered on it.

Other people

There are 5 other customers in the coffee shop alongside me. A small girl about seven years old with long black hair and a purple shirt is sitting at a small table and is coloring in a coloring book with crayons behind me as her mother looks at the shelf with cups and coffee beans. An older man with glasses is on the other side of the coffee shop, sitting at one of the two tables on the left of the door with the morning sun on his back, eating a cinnamon roll and reading a soft-cover book. In the outside seating area, there are two men in black business suits talking and taking notes while they drink from their coffee cups, with half-eaten muffins on their plates. The Starbucks employees are walking back and forth behind the counter, preparing food, cleaning, and chatting with each other.
