You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies

Out of the four roles of artists in society presented in the text, I value those with the intent to create a different perspective of the world around us. Many of the types of artwork I came across during my life have contributed to the expansion of my range and ability to truly “see”. For example, after viewing Yayoi Kusama’s, You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies, I became captivated by it. In my opinion, the design wasn’t particularly extravagant, but after studying it for a short while, my view began to change. At first glance, I only managed to think of the many dots spread across the plane. However, I gradually started to notice the way the dark background and the illuminating dots reminded me of the night sky. It felt as though I drifted into space at that moment and became engulfed by the stars. It made me feel small and less significant in a way, but all the more appreciative to be a part of something much grander than myself. This is the reason why I believe artists who create artwork to take us outside of ourselves are the most important. They present a new way of seeing things, and put our place in the universe into perspective for us.
