Overview
Students are asked to pick a topic, develop a layout, choose a color palette, create their own images and graphics and put it all together in a small, yet comprehensive three-page website.
The students create a second site in the course, also on a topic of their choice. The repetition aids in the retention of the material and processes used in the creation of the sites.
Technologies
Students learn about HTML5, CSS, optimizing graphics and images for the web, semantic markup, linking and more in the process of creating this first website. Adobe Dreamweaver is used in the development of the site.
In the second self-directed website additional topics are added, such as custom web fonts, forms, Search Engine Optimization, background images/graphics, favicons, and more.
Course
The AAD 85: Intro to Web Design course introduces HTML5 (the structure and content of the webpage), CSS (the design of the content), semantic markup (using HTML in a meaningful way), coding syntax (grammar of the code), how to prepare images/graphics for the web, and more.
This course is a pre-requisite for the AAD 86: Intermedia Web Design course offered each spring.
