Ponyo Synopsis
DESCRIPTION
Ponyo (2008) is the story of a goldfish and the daughter of the sea wizard, Fujimoto. Ponyo has a special gift of transforming into a human at will, and dreams of becoming a human permanently.
While on an adventure to see the world above water, she washes ashore and befriends a human boy named Sosuke. Sosuke and Ponyo become friends, but their friendship disrupts the natural balance of the world and causes torrential flooding in their town. The two must pass a test set by the wizard and her mother, the sea goddess, Gran Mamare, to prove their love is true enough to restore balance to the natural world.
CHARACTERS
- Ponyo: Ponyo is a curious goldfish who can turn into a human at will and who desires to remain human forever once she befriends Sosuke.
- Sōsuke: Sosuke rescues Ponyo after she washes ashore. They become best friends and are sent on a journey of self-discovery, friendship, and love.
- Fujimoto: Ponyo’s erratic wizard father who controls the sea and sends Ponyo and Sosuke through an important test of friendship and strength.
- Gran Mamare: Ponyo’s mother and wise sea goddess, Gran Mamare oversees the harmony of the ocean. She plays a role in determining Ponyo’s fate to become human forever.
